terraform fmt rewrites Terraform configuration files into the canonical format and style defined by HashiCorp. It changes whitespace and layout only: indenting nested blocks with two spaces, aligning the equals signs of consecutive arguments, normalizing spacing around operators and brackets, and similar adjustments. It never changes what the code means, and it does not check whether the code is valid; that is the job of terraform validate.
