In a mutable model, you keep servers running for a long time and change them in place: log in, apply patches, edit configuration files, upgrade software. Over months, each server accumulates its own history of changes, and two servers that started identical slowly diverge. These are sometimes called snowflake servers because no two are alike, and rebuilding one exactly becomes hard.
