Growing storage without downtime is one of LVM's (Logical Volume Manager's) main benefits. A logical volume (LV) takes space from its volume group (VG), which pools one or more physical volumes (PVs). Extending means two things: making the LV larger, and then making the file system on it use the new space. Forget the second step and df still shows the old size.
