autofs is the automounter. Instead of mounting file systems at boot, it watches directories and mounts a file system the moment someone accesses a path under them, then unmounts it after a period of inactivity. It is the standard way to give users network home directories: nothing is mounted until a user logs in, and an unreachable server does not slow down boot.
