A routing instance is a separate collection of routing tables, interfaces and routing protocol settings inside a single Junos device. By default everything lives in the master (default) instance, which uses inet.0 and inet6.0. Additional instances let you run independent routing domains side by side, with their own tables such as vr1.inet.0. The kind of separation you get depends on the instance-type you choose.
