Many objects hold resources outside the JVM, such as open files, network sockets and database connections, and they must be closed when you are done. Closing them reliably in a finally block is verbose and easy to get wrong. The try-with-resources statement automates it: resources declared in parentheses after try are closed automatically when the block finishes, whether it completes normally or throws.
