A switch expression is a switch that produces a value, so you can assign it, return it or pass it as an argument. It is usually written with arrow labels: case X -> result;. Arrow labels never fall through, so exactly one branch runs and no break is needed. When a switch expression is used as a statement on the right side of an assignment, the whole thing ends with a semicolon after the closing brace.
