Pattern matching lets a switch test the type and shape of a value, not just compare it with constants. The selector can be any reference type, such as Object or a sealed interface. Each case holds a pattern, and when the pattern matches, its variables are bound and ready to use in that branch. This replaces long chains of instanceof checks and casts.
