A switch statement picks one of several code paths by comparing a value against case labels. In the classic form, each label ends with a colon, and the code after the matching label runs. The selector can be a char, byte, short or int (or their wrappers), a String, or an enum. It cannot be a long, float, double or boolean in a classic switch. (Pattern-matching switches, covered later, accept any reference type.)
