A class is a blueprint that declares fields (the state each object or the class holds), methods (behavior) and constructors (code that sets up a new object). An instance field belongs to each object, while a static field belongs to the class and is shared. A source file can contain many top-level classes, but at most one may be public, and that one must match the file name.
