Voice and video are sensitive to delay and jitter, while file downloads mostly care about total throughput. Without quality of service (QoS), all Wi-Fi traffic competes equally. The 802.11e amendment added QoS, and the Wi-Fi Alliance certifies a subset of it called WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia). The contention method used is EDCA, Enhanced Distributed Channel Access.
