Protection mechanisms help radios that use newer PHYs share a channel with older radios that cannot understand their transmissions. They also address hidden nodes. The two mechanisms are RTS/CTS and CTS-to-self. Both work by setting the NAV of other stations so they stay quiet during a transmission.
