Users expect systems to be there when needed and to respond quickly. Availability management plans and monitors the ability of IT services to perform their agreed function when required. Capacity management makes sure resources such as processing power, memory, storage and network bandwidth meet current and future demand at an acceptable cost. The two are linked: many outages are not caused by broken hardware but by a disk that filled up or a server that could not handle a peak in demand.
