Two services quietly make every network usable. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) gives hosts their IP address, mask, default gateway and DNS server addresses automatically. DNS (Domain Name System) translates names people remember, such as www.example.com, into the IP addresses computers need. When either fails, users report that the network is down, even though routing and switching are fine. Knowing each service's role lets you tell those failures apart quickly.
