Old file servers are among the hardest workloads to retire: they have years of data, share permissions, local groups and, worst of all, a server name and IP address that users, scripts and mapped drives depend on. Storage Migration Service (SMS) is a Windows Server feature that moves all of that to a new server in a guided, repeatable way, and it can make the new server take over the old one's identity so clients do not notice.
