A Hyper-V virtual switch is a software layer 2 switch inside the host that connects VMs' virtual network adapters to each other and, optionally, to the outside world. You create switches in Hyper-V Manager's Virtual Switch Manager or with New-VMSwitch. There are three types, and choosing the right one is a common exam question.
