A failover cluster is a group of Windows Servers (nodes) that together keep clustered roles, such as a file server, Hyper-V VMs or SQL Server, running. If a node fails, the cluster restarts its roles on a surviving node. Clustering handles hardware and OS failures and planned maintenance; it is not a backup and does not protect against data corruption.
