Storage Spaces is software-defined storage built into Windows Server. It lets you group ordinary disks into a storage pool, then create virtual disks (called storage spaces) from the pool with the resiliency you choose. It replaces the need for a hardware RAID controller on a single server and is the foundation for Storage Spaces Direct in clusters.
