A backup policy defines when backups run and how long recovery points are kept. You attach one policy to many protected items, so changing the policy updates them all. The default policy for Azure virtual machines (VMs) takes one backup a day and keeps it for 30 days, but you will normally create your own to match business requirements such as a recovery point objective (RPO, the maximum acceptable data loss measured in time) and compliance retention periods.
