Networking in AWS starts with Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), which lets you launch resources into a logically isolated virtual network that you define. You choose its IP address range in Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) notation, such as 10.0.0.0/16, create subnets, configure route tables, and control traffic with security groups (stateful, at the instance level) and network access control lists (network ACLs, stateless, at the subnet level). Each Region gives you a default VPC to start with, but production designs usually use custom VPCs.
