AWS encourages you to choose a purpose-built database for each job rather than forcing every kind of data into one engine. You can run any database yourself on Amazon EC2, but then you install, patch, back up and replicate it. Managed database services take on that undifferentiated heavy lifting, so under the shared responsibility model AWS handles the database software and infrastructure, while you remain responsible for your data, schema design, access control and settings such as encryption.
