Once you have identified a probable cause, you need to choose a fix. The guiding rule is to try the least disruptive fix that addresses the cause, then escalate to more drastic options only if needed. A reboot costs the user a minute; a reimage can cost a day. Before anything that could lose data, back up the user's files, and document every step in the ticket so the next technician knows what was tried.
