Mobile devices such as phones, tablets and laptops pack batteries, radios and screens into small, sealed cases, so their problems often involve power, heat and physical damage. Some issues can be fixed with settings; others, such as a swollen battery, are safety hazards that need immediate care. Follow the troubleshooting methodology, back up data when possible and check warranty and repair options before opening a sealed device. Poor battery life has many causes. Lithium-ion batteries wear out and hold less charge after many charge cycles, and the device's battery health or battery report shows how much capacity remains. Software also drains batteries: high screen brightness, apps running in the background, constant location services, weak cellular signal causing the radio to search, and malware. Check battery usage by app in settings, lower brightness, enable battery saver, update the operating system and apps, and remove unneeded apps. If capacity is badly degraded, replace the battery.
