The state file is a JSON document. Open a local terraform.tfstate in a text editor and you will see a format version, the Terraform version that wrote it, a serial number that increases with every write, a lineage identifier that ties all versions of one state together, the root module's outputs, and a resources list. Each resource entry records its mode (managed or data), type, name, provider, and one or more instances with their full attribute values and dependencies.
