Segmentation divides a network into smaller zones with controlled paths between them. The goal is to contain damage: if one area is compromised, the attacker cannot freely move laterally to everything else. Segmentation also makes monitoring easier and supports compliance, for example by isolating payment card systems to reduce audit scope.
