Many older network protocols, such as Telnet, FTP, HTTP and plain SMTP, send data and often passwords in cleartext. Anyone on the path can read or alter them. Secure protocols wrap communications in encryption and authentication. The exam expects you to know which secure protocol replaces which insecure one, what layer it works at, and its typical port.
