Linux has one directory tree starting at /. Mounting attaches a file system to a directory in that tree, called the mount point, so its contents appear there. Whatever was inside the mount point directory before is hidden until you unmount. On RHEL you mount manually to test and use /etc/fstab to make mounts persistent across reboots.
