A partition or logical volume is only raw block space until you put a file system on it. The file system decides how files, directories, permissions and free space are tracked. RHEL uses XFS as its default, supports ext4 as a mature alternative, and uses vfat (the FAT family) where other operating systems or firmware must read the disk, such as the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) system partition or a USB stick.
