Sometimes an account must stop working without being deleted: an employee is on leave, a contractor's work is paused, or you suspect a password was exposed. Locking keeps the account, its files and its UID intact so you can restore access later. RHEL offers two different mechanisms, and understanding what each actually blocks is the key point.
