A NetworkManager connection profile does nothing until it is activated on a device. nmcli con up name activates a profile, applying its addresses, routes and DNS. nmcli con down name deactivates it. Because only one profile can be active on a device at a time, bringing up a second profile on the same interface replaces the first.
