On a RHEL system, systemd is the first process the kernel starts (process ID 1). It brings up services in the right order during boot and stops them cleanly at shutdown. Shutting down or rebooting through systemd, rather than pulling the power, gives services time to save data, unmount file systems and flush disk caches. On the exam you will reboot often, because every configuration must survive a reboot, so you should do it cleanly and know what happens.
