When a project builds or changes software, it follows a software development life cycle (SDLC), a structured sequence of activities from idea to retirement. A common form has these phases: planning, requirements analysis, design, development (coding), testing, deployment and maintenance. The SDLC can be run in a waterfall style, with each phase completed before the next starts, or iteratively and incrementally as in agile, where each sprint includes a little requirements work, design, coding and testing. Knowing the phases helps a project manager plan the right activities, reviews and sign-offs.
