File I/O: open() modes (r, w, a, x, b, t, +), text versus binary

To work with a file, you first open it with open(filename, mode), which returns a stream object for reading and writing. The mode string says what you intend to do, and each mode has precise consequences for existing files, which the exam tests directly.
