CompTIA's troubleshooting methodology is a structured way to solve problems so you do not jump to conclusions, make things worse, or fix the symptom but not the cause. Experienced engineers often move through it quickly and informally, but the structure keeps you honest when a problem is stressful or unfamiliar. The exam tests the steps and, above all, their order, often by describing what a technician has just done and asking what should come next. Learn the seven steps word for word: identify the problem; establish a theory of probable cause; test the theory; establish a plan of action; implement the solution or escalate; verify full system functionality and implement preventive measures; document findings, actions, outcomes and lessons learned.
