IEEE 802.11 is the family of wireless LAN standards, marketed by the Wi-Fi Alliance under generation names such as Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6. Knowing the band and approximate theoretical maximum speed of each helps you pick equipment, understand compatibility and read exam scenarios. Real-world throughput is always well below these theoretical figures, typically half or less, because Wi-Fi is shared, half-duplex on each channel and full of management overhead.
