Not all software arrives through your distribution's repositories. Sometimes you build from source, install a library with a language package manager, or use a sandboxed universal package. Each approach has trade-offs in updates, security and tidiness, and Linux+ expects you to know how each works and when to prefer it. The general rule is to use distribution packages first and reach for the others only when you need something the repositories do not offer.
