Hardware problems often masquerade as software bugs: random crashes, filesystem errors, slow I/O or devices that disappear. Linux gives you good visibility into hardware through kernel messages and inventory tools, and Linux+ expects you to use them to confirm or rule out a hardware fault before spending hours on configuration. The workflow is to read the kernel's view, identify the device and driver, check the device's own health data, and then protect data if a disk is failing.
