Every packet a Junos device receives falls into one of two groups, and knowing which is essential for understanding performance and security. Transit traffic passes through the device on its way somewhere else. Exception traffic needs attention from the Routing Engine, either because it is addressed to the device or because the PFE cannot handle it alone.
