Protecting the RE with a filter on the lo0 interface

The Routing Engine is the one part of a Junos device that attackers and misconfigured systems can overload with relatively little traffic, because it is a general-purpose CPU. Juniper's standard defense is a firewall filter applied to the loopback interface, lo0. Because of how Junos works, a filter on lo0 inspects all host-bound traffic, the traffic headed to the RE, no matter which physical interface it arrived on.
