The Junos CLI has two main modes, and nearly everything you do starts by knowing which one you are in. Operational mode is for monitoring and managing the device: viewing status, running tests, restarting processes and upgrading software. Configuration mode is for changing the configuration. The prompt tells you which you are in: user@router> means operational mode and user@router# means configuration mode.
