The java launcher can run a program directly from source, without a separate javac step. Running java Hello.java arg1 arg2 compiles the file in memory and runs it; no .class files are written to disk. This source-file mode is intended for small programs, scripts, experiments and learning. The launcher recognizes it because the first non-option argument ends in .java.
