Different regions write numbers differently. The value one thousand two hundred thirty-four and a half is written 1,234.5 in the US, 1.234,5 in Germany and with a space as the grouping separator in France. java.text.NumberFormat handles these rules. It is abstract; you get an instance from a factory method, passing a Locale or relying on the default.
