Vendor lock-in happens when moving away from a provider becomes so costly or difficult that you are effectively stuck. It can come from proprietary data formats, APIs that exist only on one platform, skills that do not transfer, or contracts. Leaders worry about lock-in because it weakens their negotiating position and makes it harder to adopt better technology later.
