A static route on its own only disappears if its interface goes physically down; it stays in the table even when the path beyond the next hop is broken. Two features fix the gaps this creates: link health monitors detect a dead path and remove its route, and blackhole routes safely drop traffic that would otherwise leak to the wrong place. Both are staples of resilient FortiGate design and appear regularly on the exam.
