IEEE 802.1X is a port-based network access control standard. Originally designed for wired switch ports, it is the foundation of enterprise Wi-Fi security. The idea is simple: a device is not allowed to send normal traffic through a port until it has proved who it is. On Wi-Fi, the port is the logical connection between a client and an AP after association.
