A monolithic application is built and deployed as one unit: a change to any feature means rebuilding and redeploying the whole thing, and one busy feature forces you to scale everything. A microservices architecture splits the application into small, independent services, each owning one business capability and its own data, communicating over the network through APIs. Teams can deploy, scale and choose technology for each service separately, and a failure in one service need not take down the others.
