Configuration management (CM) keeps systems in a known, approved and secure state throughout their lives. Many breaches trace back to misconfiguration: default passwords left in place, unnecessary services running, storage made public by mistake, or one server that drifted away from the hardened standard. CM gives you consistency, and consistency makes systems easier to secure, audit, troubleshoot and recover. It is a core security operations responsibility, not just an IT convenience.
