A traditional enterprise WAN typically connects branches to a data center over private circuits such as MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) Layer 3 VPNs or leased lines. Each branch router is configured individually through the command line. Internet access is often backhauled through the data center so it can be inspected centrally. This works, but it is expensive, slow to change and poorly suited to cloud applications.
