Normal routing looks only at the destination address. Policy-based routing (PBR) lets you override that decision based on other criteria, such as the source address, the application or the packet size. You might send guest traffic out a cheap internet link while corporate traffic uses MPLS, or route a specific server's backups over a dedicated path.
