BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is the routing protocol of the internet and the usual way enterprises connect to service providers. It is a path-vector protocol: each route carries attributes, including the list of autonomous systems (AS) it has crossed. External BGP (eBGP) runs between routers in different autonomous systems; internal BGP (iBGP) runs within one AS.
